Are you a hater or a lover of romantic comedies? Do you hate the classic clichés but secretly love them? If any of these things apply to you then you will definitely enjoy Rebel Wilson's new movie Isn't it Romantic.
The movie follows a young architect named Natalie who surprise surprise hates romantic comedies. Natalie complains for a solid two hours to her coworker about all the dumb things that appear in the cheesy movie genre. When she goes to take the subway home she is mugged by someone she believes is hitting on here and knocks herself unconscious on a large metal post. When she wakes up she is in a Romantic Comedy and it's her worst nightmare. Isn't It Romantic Trailer.
The movie is loaded with star power featuring Rebel Wilson as main character Natalie. Wilson has been featured in multiple comedies like Bridesmaids and of course playing the beloved Fat Amy in all three Pitch Perfect films. Along with Adam Devine who has co stared with Wilson on multiple projects and played a romantic interest for Rebel in Pitch Perfect. The real eye candy in the movie in my opinion of course is the gorgeous Liam Hemsworth who has starred in huge blockbusters like The Hunger Games. Along with the beautiful Priyanka Chopra who won the Miss World title in 2000 and is currently married to pop sensation Nick Jonas. Needless to say the star power plays a huge role in the movie.
The film has received multiple positive reviews. The Google users survey said that 87% of viewers like this movie. Some of the reviews are average like IMBD giving the movie a 6.1 out of 10 and only scoring 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes was only 55% which is surprising to me as I found the movie very well done. The New York Post writer Johnny Oleksinski said "Unlike other movies where women bang their heads, this ones got a brain." trying to take a stab at the typical romantic comedy movie.
The movie had plenty of references to some of the most classic romantic comedies ever like Garry Marshall's Pretty Woman as the actress puts on the one of the featured outfits that Julia Roberts wears in the classic. Later in the movie she also wears a similar red iconic dress to the one featured in the hit classic and kisses her unreasonably handsome boyfriend in the rain. Blake (Liam Hemsworth) even resembles Edward Lewis when he says he doesn't want his romantic partner to work after they are married in both of the flicks. The movie definitely gave me a sense of deja vu with all the references to older movies.
WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD
One of my favorite movies growing up was 13 Going On 30 this movie really follows the same plot line as this one. The main character is living a not so fabulous life and both hit their heads, one running into a metal pole and the other on a shelf. When the characters in both movies awake from their little accidents they are in a dream like world where they have huge closets, hot boyfriends, and new cooler friends. Now heres were I really saw the resemblance, both main characters have a guy best friend who they never saw as anything more than a friend (of course) and then when they come back out of their dream like state at the end of the movie they obviously go for their best friend. Well in the case of this new movie Natalie decided that the person who she really needs to love is her self. (cheesy I know) Overall the movie has tons of references to plenty other movies but I saw the resemblance heavy when comparing these two movies.
Overall I did actually enjoy the movie the actors did a great job of portraying their characters. It's definitely more comedy based as the movie constantly mocks the classic romantic comedies. I wouldn't say that this movie is for everyone I actually saw it with my boyfriend and I enjoyed it more than him. The movie definitely caters to women rather than men as most movies in this genre do. This movie in my opinion is worth seeing once I don't know if I would want to see it again as I considered the movie to be a one and done movie.
